Japan Cabinet
The Japan collection celebrates open joint wood work that is prominent in Japanese traditional architecture, lacquerware and has restrained details. The Japan Cabinet zeros in on these values with radius cut aways' at the corner of the doors and drawers (in the Chest of drawer version) that are reminiscent of a mandarin style shirt collar - and also act as a semantic, open handle for the units. I decided to design a shelving and console table reminiscent of an Arabic style, a tribute to the passion and creativity of Middle Eastern culture, while using materials and processes which are Western in technique, production and finish. It is also inspired by the classic Candelabra which has been a beacon of light and a detail of sophistication in many a European household.
